Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot
Columbia Valley, Washington
J. Bookwalter's tag line is "Literally, the best of Washington wine." We appreciate the confidence! Ten generations of Bookwalters have been involved in all sorts of agriculture. It was Jerry Bookwalter, father of current president John, who led the family into viticulture. Jerry spent 13 years farming in California’s San Joaquin Valley after graduating from UC Davis. In 1976 the family moved to Washington State. Notebook is a blend of four vintages (vertical blending) and multiple grape varieties (horizontal blending). The number preceding the NV indicates the version produced. The 6NV is the 6th Notebook blend and is now the winery's largest produced wine at 5,000 cases. Each lot and variety is selected carefully, based on the matured flavours of older vintages and fresh fruit characteristics of younger vintages. The combination results in structure and approachability, with excellent value! Enjoy in the next year or two at 17C.
An opaque core, the colour of the darkest red plums.
Aromatically delicious and distinct. Wild, herbacious, mature and rugged. Fresh red berries, mashed apples, red currant and figs with darker nuances of plum and black cherry. With time, hints of violet, peppercorn and sun-baked earth.
With so much going on the nose, the palate is welcoming and smooth. Elegant and soft mouthfeel, with very well integrated tannins. Medium acidity is freshening, but not overly noticeable. Masculine characteristics shine through and overtake the delicate fruits. There is stronger emphasis on blackberry, bruised plum, bitter chocolate and sweet oak. Expect caramel and bakers chocolate with toast, tobacco and a cola finish.
Best to decant prior to serving, but not necessary. From summer BBQ to winter comfort food. We suggest BBQ Brisket on a brioche bun.
