Clos du Soleil is a French term translated to an 'enclosed Vineyard of the Sun'. In the Similkameem Valley, steep hillsides provide a backdrop to the vineyards, fitting the name of the winery. Each variety and vineyard block is harvested separately, in order to reinforce terroir expression. The blend is 51% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. After each varietal is aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, only the best (showing great complexity and depth) are selected for the Signature blend. The Signature is Clos du Soleil's Bordeaux-style blend and also the estate's flagship wine. 2013 is the product of ideal growing conditions and is an outstanding example of this iconic wine. Clos du Soleil has a Canadian wine club, Soleil 160, offering members the newest releases and exclusive benefits. This wine is unfined and unfiltered, decanted is necessary to remove sediment. Enjoy at 17C or cellar until 2023.
Opulent ruby with a garnet core.
The winery notes: "Dense and layered perfumes of this wine, with notes of cedar, fresh blackberry and cassis, and a hint of cracked black pepper." We fell head-over-heels for the elegant aromas that are potent and savoury.
"On the palate the wine bursts with ripe fruit flavours – blackberry, raspberry and red currant – expressed through an elegant, mouth-filling structure and soft, round tannins. Enjoyable in its youth, the fine tannins and beautiful balance of this wine will ensure its ability to age for well over a decade." Clos du Soleil's tasting notes perfectly describe the decadent and robust flavours.
Bordeaux-style blends can pair well with many dishes if produced with great structure, balance and acidity. Merlot based, we would opt for rich dishes like tenderloin, roast duck, or even turkey.
