Clos du Soleil is a small artisan winery and estate vineyard situated on the Similkameen Valley Upper Bench, one of the newest wine appellations in the world. The Similkameen Valley's elevation is 1300 feet slightly higher than other areas in the Okanagan at 1100 feet, affording it slightly cooler evenings but still maintaining the desert heat during the summer months. Clos du Soleil is focused on super-premium quality 100% Canadian wines done in a Bordeaux style and according to the winery “where Old World elegance meets with a little New World/Canadian oomph”. The name refers to rocks, sun, and soil, from the mountain which forms a tall natural stone wall at the back of the vineyard (the Clos), the cobbled terroir, and the long days of sun which pour in on the Similkameen Bench, where it is typically 3-4 degrees warmer than elsewhere in the valley. This juicy and fruit-forward Bordeaux-style red with 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and 9% Petit Verdot. Enjoy by 2022 and just below room temperature, 17 C.
Dark ruby with plummy reflections.
The taster is greeted with bright, fresh aromas of blackcurrant and raspberry, with further notes of cranberry and spice.
Célestiale is Clos du Soleil’s Bordeaux-style blend that is soft and full of fruit with an elegant and classic structure. The wine has seen 18 months of French oak which gives the Cab some significant structure without being overbearing. We suggest decanting this wine for up to an hour prior to serving. On the palate the wine is remarkably rich and layered, with flavours of black cherries, ripe raspberries, plums and savoury grilled notes.
When we had this wine in the office we were unanimous in suggesting a cheese food pairing. Try Banon, Idiazabal or Roquefort.
