Profile

Howard Vineyards produce sleek and sophisticated wines that are brand new to Canada and exclusively available to WineCollective members. Family owned and operated since 1890 near Nairne, where winemaker Tom Northcott's goal is "to make textural, cool climate wines that are light and elegant with a finesse that reflects the terroir of the vineyards." Founder, Amos Howard selected the site after he found subterranean clover in abundance in the valley, an important nitrogen source for the vineyards, which continues to thrive on the estate.

With Cabernet Sauvignon (52%) and Shiraz from estate vineyards, this blend is commonly known as "The Great Australian Red'. This style of wine became synonymous with Australia in the 1800's, and was brought back into popularity in the 1950's. Since then, Australia has dabbled with more exotic grapes and daring blends, but the good ol' Cab/Shiraz still reigns supreme! Properly cellared, can be aged until 2022, but great today! Serve at 18 C.

Look

Dark ruby core that fades to medium opacity and more of a raspberry hue, with a thin, pale rim.

Smell

We are on a berry picking extravaganza! Wild and ripe notes from boysenberry, dark cherry and black currants. The sweet, plump berries are balanced by tart flavours and savoury herbs. We can detect light notes of oak and faint pepper spice.

Taste

A soft entry of mild fruit notes and spice evolves into a plump mid-palate full of plums, brambly berries and bing cherries. Dried herbs are stronger on the palate, giving off a rustic, ethereal vibe. Integrated tannins are well placed with the bounty of fruits, giving a drying appeal, and moderated with pleasant acidity. The woodiness is detected in the finish and lingers well after your sip. Overall, a solid wine!

Pairing

Bison medallions with a wild berry compote - channelling the strong bramble notes in the wine and playing up the rustic nature of herbs and oak.
