Caprili takes its name from the ancient name for the holm oak, a commonly found plant in Tuscany. The Bartolommei family purchased the estate in 1965, located in the southwest municipality of Montalcino. The property spreads over 58 hectares, 18 of which are dedicated to vineyards. The majority of land is planted with Sangiovese for the production of their Brunello di Montalcino. Caprili's Brunello is critically acclaimed and has won many awards and high scores - even ranked on Wine Enthusiast's Top 10 Brunello list! 'Ilex" is also named after a native plant, holly or 'Quercus Ilex'. It grows bountiful on the estate and is a symbol of Montalcino. You can find the picture of the berry on the front label of the wine. The Sangiovese Grosso vineyards slope southwest on the hillside towards the Orcia and Ombrone Rivers, giving excellent exposure to the sun. The climate is dry and the rocky soils provide ventilation and rich minerals to the vines. Enjoy by 2022 at 18 C.

How it looks

Dark garnet core with cherry hued edges - a bit rustic in tis reflections.

How it smells

Bold and brooding! Rich, deep berry notes from black cherry, plum and even riper blackberry, with pops of peppery spice. Playing even more to the etherial, rustic character, notes of spruce and evergreen are mingled with black liquorice and new leather.

How it tastes

Take a sip and experience the slightly grippy, cottony tannins. Then decant for 30 - 60 minutes before pouring another glass, we know the wait is the hardest part! The wine will flesh out and open to a rounder body and palate. Plenty of structure and backbone is supported by tart notes of cranberry, choke cherry and briar patch. A wild and slightly rustic fruit layer covers the palate and leaves room for light pepper and wintery herbs, like bay leaf.

Recommended food pairing

A pistachio crusted rack of lamb is a fun and elegant dinner. We expect the sweetness of the nutty crust will play up with the tartness of the wine.
