Some of you may think you're having déjà vu and you are right! We have featured Clos d'Alzan Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues before - last December we featured the 2014 vintage to be exact!
Our purchasing team has looked back at some of the amazing wines we have featured over the years and decided to bring some of these beauties back! Clos d'Alzan is the first in this series! (Let us know if there's anything you would like to see!)
This beautiful Côtes du Rhône (CDR) is a real treat! From the top of the CDR tier, Signargues is the southernmost Villages status appellation. Signargues is named from "Sign" referring to the bloodshed during the various invasions of the land and "Argues" references the Roman city. The land is known for its awesome vineyards but also for its cultural and historical heritage. The famous double-sided statuette of Bacchus and Ariane was discovered there (now found in the Louvre).
The 2015 vintage is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. A teeter-totter of elegance and power is evident in every sip. This gem is ready to drink now, but don't be afraid to cellar for up to 4 years. Enjoy at 18 C.
Showing youthful and bright, reminding us of a shiny candied red apple!
A bright, young nose has us thinking of spring! Ripe bushels of raspberries, red currants and red plums greet us initially. Layered underneath are hints of baking spices, cranberry and savoury herbs. Black fruits - currants and berries - are present, balanced by a slight minerality.
Predominately Grenache, the first sip is filled with bright red fruits such as cranberry, raspberry, grilled strawberries and red plums. The Syrah hits the mid-palate with the darker notes of pepper and blackberry with a hint of slate. The combination creates a round mouthfeel. The weight is medium with full flavour. The tannins are firm and the acidity is fresh, creating a long, clean finish. Decant to bring aromas and flavours forward.
Super versatile, the opportunities are endless! Depending on the time of year - winter: a slow-cooked, flavour rich cassoulet immediately pops to mind. Spring or Autumn, coq au vin with rabbit is delicious! Summer, try a steak salad with fennel and a raspberry vinaigrette.
