2018 marked the arrival of Oakridge wines in Canada! We were very proud to be the first to share these wines with our members, and the timing couldn't have been any better! The winemaker at Oakridge, David Bicknell, had just won winemaker of the year 2017 from Gourmet Traveller, a very prestigious honour! And good news travels fast, their wines are more sought after than ever, which proves difficult getting much more than a few cases.
Oakridge is from the Yarra Valley, the wine region surrounding the Yarra River in Victoria. The region is about 45 km east of Melbourne and borders the Great Dividing Range. Yarra Valley is one of the most southern appellations in the country. It has a continental climate with additional cooling factors from the ocean. There are a wide variety of microclimates attributed to different soil types, elemental exposure and elevations between 50-430 meters. In general, this area is cooler than most other wine regions in Australia. Cooler regions will produce more white wines and Burgundian varietals, like Pinot Noir. Enjoy chilled to 10 C within the next year.
Clean and fresh perfumes from early season orchard fruits, crunchy golden apples and apple blossoms. The aromas are simple, but very appealing and addictive. Although we have great food pairing options here, this is a wine we could easily just swirl, sniff and sip on its own.
This Pinot Grigio was pressed directly to a combination of stainless and oak barrels for fermentation and maturation, before blending and bottling. The result is a very balanced white wine, which is both dry and crisp, with good weight and layers of flavours. A wine whose style is broadly appealing and should please everyone - it showcase the best of both worlds. Stone fruits, floral blossoms, light notes of sweet spices and subtle oak flavour, all wrapped into one bottle!
