Wines of Substance are the newest lineup of wines from Charles Smith. You may be familiar with his Charles & Charles or Vino wines under the Casa Smith brand. All K Vintners brands under Charles Smith showcase sharp and graphic labels, and big, bold wines. Here, single varietal and small batch Merlot is produced with traditional methods and only available in limited quantities. Charles Smith is Washington's 4th largest producer in the state, and the Substance wines are adding to the high-end portion of the portfolio. Although many of the wines are boutique and hard to find, Charles Smith's outlandish style and trailblazing spirit have drawn a lot of attention. He is an artisan winemaker, self-taught, with a pioneering attitude. He is the only person to have received Winemaker of the Year distinctions by both Wine Enthusiast and Food & Wine. The Substance wines are not fined or filtered, so there may be some sediment - completely harmless and natural. Allow your bottle to stand upright for a day prior to serving, to allow the particles to settle to the bottom, and be sure to pour the last glass slowly to avoid an abundance of sediment in your glass. We also suggest decanting prior to serving. With a few years in bottle already, this wine is easily enjoyed today but can cellar until 2022. Serve at 17 C.
Velvety plum colouring, deep and dark.
The aromas develop with time, the nose evolves from mineral, leather and earth, to densely fruit-filled with dark berries, cherries and plums. The 21 months in new French oak barriques (50%) deliver notes of toasted vanilla bean and aged oak chest and cedar.
This 100% Merlot is sourced from the Northridge Vineyard, and the vintage shows a more masculine version compared to the 2013 bottling. The vines are grown on ancient soils consisting of loam, sand and limestone, above the Missoula Flood plain, resulting in concentrated and mineral flavours. Wine Advocate expressed that it "...shows a gorgeous spice, dried violet, cassis and graphite character, a full-bodied, seamless and elegant personality as well as thrilling purity and class."
Wahluke Slope is hot and dry, and the wines carry high ABV, so you will want to avoid spicy and light bodied foods. Opt for rich and fatty protein, like prime rib with creamy mushroom gravy.
