Chateau Haut-Vigneau

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

13.5 Alcohol

We sometimes come across a wine that is too good to only be featured once, and Château Haut-Vigneau is one of them. We were blown away by the value and our members' adoration for the 2014 vintage, so we have re-introduced the new vintage in our first delivery of 2019. Château Haut-Vigneau is exclusive to our members in Canada, not found anywhere else. The 2014 vintage sold out quickly, so be sure to act fast if you love the new vintage as much as we do!

Although Bordeaux wines carry a cachè of prestige and expense, not all wines produced here are unattainable. In fact, most are of reasonable price, the trick is to find the best value for your dollar. By looking at some of the more obscure regions within Bordeaux, you can find great quality at a fraction of the cost. Of the 57 appellations in Bordeaux, Blaye is the most northern, found on the Right Bank, east and across the Gironde river from the Médoc region. Officially designated an AOC in 1936, the history of this area dates back to the Roman Empire. The region is quite hilly, giving the vines planted here great sun exposure while being just 70 metres above sea level.

Château Haut-Vigneau is home to a tiny 2.5 hectares, where the majority of vineyards are planted to Merlot (the dominant varietal in Right Bank Bordeaux). The winery uses organic and sustainable viticultural practices and produces small yields. Enjoy today or cellar until 2026. Decanting is not necessary, but it is suggested. Serve at 16 C.

How it looks

Dark burgundy-hued core with gleaming raspberry edges.

How it smells

Plump plums, dark berries and purple violets are accented with obvious aromas of graphite and pencil shavings. The secondary aromas and minerality are bold but will become more balanced with the fruit after time in the bottle or your glass. There is also ample spice from black peppercorns and a lingering of fine oak.

How it tastes

Medium+ bodied with lightly grainy tannins and juicy acidity. The palate is also dominated by the secondary notes of oak and mineral, leaving less room for the ripe plums and cherries. Instead, we find more of the bitter pits and skins. With decanting, we reveal more delicate layers of red and blue berries and soft purple florals. Although a similar composition to the 2014 vintage, the 2015 is a bit more austere and needs some coaxing to reveal its feminine side.

Recommended food pairing

Not too tannic and not too acidic, this wine is just right! We like a rich and flavourful dish that isn't too fatty. Instead of a steak, try roasted guinea fowl served with a red wine sauce and figs.
