Profile

Get prepared for this epic, exclusive offering from one of our favourite producers, Domaine of the Bee. Doesn't this bottle scream "drink me now!"? If you don't believe us, hear it from the critics, Jeb Dunnuck rated this wine 92 points with a rave review "Another flat-out terrific 2016 from the Roussillon...one seriously good Grenache...".

The first vintage of this new label created by Master of Wine (isn't that the best job title ever!) Justin Howard-Sneyd. Roughly 6 barrels were made, which equates to about 1,800 bottles, and we loved it so much that we bought about 3/4 of the total production! This is a celebration of the Grenache grape, which performs ideally in the Roussillon region. The vineyards are grown on schist soil, which is created from clay, loam and silt which is buried, under the pressure of the earths surface and heat become metamorphic. We could talk about soil for days! Why is it important? On a basic level, different soils will have varying level of nutrients which impacts vigour, drainage capabilities with impact stress and irrigation, and temperature regulation by retaining heat or staying cool.

We are swooning over this wine now, and bet you won't be able to resist opening this right away and we wouldn't blame you. However, if you have patience, this will cellar well for another 8 years. Better yet, stock up to have some for today and the future. This is a one-time exclusive with very few bottles available! Serve at 18 C.

Look

A dense, velvety red that is consistent and youthful in appearance.

Smell

Take a deep, long inhale and experience a journey of cherry, gravel minerality and perfumed rose petals. There is a lot going on here, but all the aromas are harmonious, not chaotic. What do we mean? The scents seem to roll into each other effortlessly, giving an ease to the complexity offering the fruit, rock and floral a continuity.

Taste

Straight from Dunnuck, "Its elegant and beautifully balanced, with fine tannins and a great finish...". We find the flavours a bit tight at first, with less fruit offerings and more mineral, sand, oak and fruit pit. It will benefit for decanting or a patient sipper. This is an opulent demonstration of Grenache, with a juiciness that is not gushing or sweet. Tart red plums, wild cherry, dried herbs, and subtle spices converge to a classic Grenache.

Pairing

Winemakers, Justin Howard-Sneyd and Jean-Marc Lafage, suggest wild boar, saussices catalan, and, in general, grilled meats. We are drawn to a rack of lamb with a thick herb crust roast potatoes. This can be enjoyed by itself, but we think it deserves a formidable partner.
