Profile

We love to bring you the weird and wonderful and this 100% Castelao from the Setubal Peninsula in Portugal is exceptionally wonderful! Castelao is an indigenous grape variety you’re not likely to find anywhere outside of Portugal. If you don’t recognize the name the grape, you might know it by its more famous name, Periquita (although Periquita is a legally protected name, owned by Fonseca). Castelao is great wine if you’re a fan of Italian Barbera, and it’s just as versatile. It’s often a juicy, easy-drinking wine but you’ll often find age-worthy, “serious” examples with a lot of depth and concentration.

The Cintila Castelao is a great example of a value wine that drinks far above its price point. We recommend serving at room temperature (around 16-18 C) and possibly decanting if you find the wine a bit tight on the first pour. The 2017 Cintila is meant to be consumed young and is ready to drink now.

Look

Brilliant ruby core pushing out to a light rim.

Smell

Violets and iron dominate, supported by raspberries, steel and a trace of fresh herbs. After the initial mineral and floral aroma, you’ll get a rush of juicy berries.

Taste

The palate mimics the nose with that initial overwhelming mineral quality. You might pick up on flavours of wet stone, cold steel, game and even a bit of blue rare steak. The wine is medium bodied with soft tannins and a bucket load of ripe blueberries, blueberry compote and a hint of vanilla. The finish leaves you reaching for another glass.

Pairing

Roasted meat or vegetables with fresh herbs is the way to go with this wine. Use your slow cooker for beef stew with peppers, tomatoes, onions and rosemary topped with fresh basil for an easy, delicious pairing.
