Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
Similkameen Valley, Okanagan
New Vintage! This wine was previously featured in the store, but is back by popular demand! Clos du Soleil's home in the Similkameen Valley is a hidden gem of the Okanagan. Clos du Soleil produces Bordeaux style wines from the small appellation. Clos du Soleil is a French term translated to an 'enclosed Vineyard of the Sun'. In the Similkameem Valley, steep hillsides provide a backdrop to the vineyards, fitting the name of the winery. The winding Similkameen River, a tributary of the Okanagan River, cuts a path through the mountains, giving rise to a warm, arid terroir with a wide variety of soil types where many Bordeaux varietals to be found. Similkameen averages about 200 ft. higher elevation than the rest of the Okanagan, giving slightly cooler nights, giving their wines great acidity. Also, on average, days are 3-4 degrees warmer than other areas in the valley, allowing ripening of even the toughest of varietals. Enjoy the Capella by 2020 and serve at 10 C.
Sporting a light golden hue in the glass.
The wine greets the drinker with heady aromas of lemon curd, grapefruit, and subtle wisps of smoke.
On the palate there is an immediate sense of weight and richness as the wine envelops the taster with layers of ripe grapefruit, lime zest, as well as more tropical flavours of passion-fruit, quince and even hints of pineapple. There is a lively sense of saline minerality, stringing these flavours together into a unified whole, right through to the long finish. There is only the most subtle sense of oak, but more telling is the sense of volume and richness coming from the sur-lie barrel aging.
This is a complex and engaging seafood winepar-excellence: sea-bass, tuna, crab, or oysters would be a knock-out. Roast chicken or herb-crusted pork would be excellent too. Enjoyable now, this is a wine which will develop an added sense of richness with age.
