Pinot Blanc is most prominently found in northeastern regions of Europe, including France, Italy (as Pinot Bianco), Germany (as 'Weissburgunder' or 'white Burgundy'), and Austria. Originating in Burgundy, where little Pinot Blanc is now produced, and Champagne, where only small amounts are permitted, it is understandable that this varietal would flourish in the Okanagan, as it offers a similar climate. The first trial plantings of Pinot Blanc arrived in BC in the 1970's; it was once BC's most widely planted white varietal.
The Similkameen Valley follows a tributary of the Okanagan lake, spanning 90 km, from Tulameen to the US border. As with many river valleys, the variations in soil and exposure produce many micro-climates. This region is generally quite arid, but blessed with strong, cooling winds. We strongly recommend visiting Clos du Soleil and checking out their new tasting room. Alternatively, check out their online wine club! Enjoy by 2020 at 10C.
