Malbec, Cabernet Franc
The Baritone Cabernet Franc is "An experimental wine, with the character of a Cabernet Franc, but dosed with 15% of barrel-fermented Malbec to add a unique twist." We love the approach taken with this wine and think the end result is perfection in a bottle! Klassen is extremely small and only produces very limited quantities, which means everything with their name on it will be 100%. All of their wines are aged a minimum of 16 months in new French oak barrels. They are dedicated to experimenting with new techniques, "usually reserved only for the more unusual and special wines, including co-fermentation and barrel fermentation of red single-varietal and blended wines. The result is a type of rare wine, hard to find anywhere and full of complex expression." Klassen is a high-altitude, boutique vineyard nestled in Argentina’s Uco Valley, 50 miles south of Mendoza. Brand new to Canada and available in limited quantities, these premium Malbec and blends are sure to go fast! We did not have enough bottles to share in our member packages, so act fast before these rare bottles are gone. Enjoy today or within the next 5 years after decanting, and serve at 16 C.
Bright ruby with a garnet undertone that shows shades of plum and cranberry.
A nose full of ripe, dark red berries that form the base of sweet and crunchy fruits. There is a component of liquorice all-sorts candies, grilled capsicum, spice from cracked peppercorns and stewed or baked rhubarb. We also experience aromas from the oak, adding a toasty vanilla note to the nose.
Brambly and bright - there is a mixture between fresh spring picked berries and woodsy earth. The flavours on the palate trend more to black fruit than red, opposed to the nose. This richer, darker fruit profile partners well with the hints of pepper and soil. It is medium bodied and carries a balanced acidity that causes our mouths to water at just the right time. The tannins are light and smooth, making this even more approachable.
A greatly versatile wine, this can be paired with almost anything. We are thinking that grilled steak fajitas with caramelized onions and roasted peppers would be an easy pairing complimenting the pepper and spice in the wine.
