We're so lucky to have this rare wine to share with you, because this is normally only available at the Inniskillin cellar door. You won't find a lot of Tempranillo coming out of the Okanagan Valley, but that's exactly what the Inniskillin Discovery Series is for. "These wines showcase the adventuresome and innovative side of the winemaker’s expertise, experience and curiosity. Wines are produced in small lots reflecting unexplored varieties in the Okanagan Valley along with blends, outstanding vintages and signature styles to create uniqueness linked with Inniskillin’s history."
We associate Tempranillo with warm to hot climates like Spain and Portugal so it may seem odd to find this grape variety grown in the "cool climate" of the Okanagan Valley, BC. Although classified as a cool climate, we know how hot the summers can get, especially in the Southern part of the OK Valley! Vineyard placement is crucial for grape varieties that need sun and heat during the day and cooler temperatures at night. This is exactly what these Tempranillo grapes get. The 2015 vintage in the Valley was hot and dry offering exceptional quality in the vineyards, especially for grape varieties needed more heat and ripening time. Make no mistake, British Columbia is offering premium quality, robust wines with enough finesse and complexity to rival some of the more well-known wines around the world.
This wine is vibrant and plush enough to open right now and decant for at least 30 minutes before serving. You can hang on to it in the cellar for another 8-10 years or more if you have the patience, but it's ready for you now. Serve at a cellar temperature of about 18 C.
