Profile

For better or worse, Argentina has become known for Malbec under $20. On one hand, it’s great that this New World wine region has created a unique identity for itself, but it’s far too easy for us to put Argentine in the “Value Brand” box with little thought for its premium wines. In the heart of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina, Bodegas Salentein strives to broaden and elevate our expectations of Argentine wines. Yes, there is great value in many of the Mendoza offerings, but there is also a great capacity for high quality, premium level blends that can rival blends of the world that you might associate with Tuscany or Bordeaux.

The wine is a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The grapes were very carefully selected from plots on some of the best vineyard land in the Uco Valley. We recommend decanting this wine for about 30-60 minutes before serving. It's a bit tight when you first open it, so some time to breathe will definitely help to open up the aromas and soften the grippy tannins. Serve at room temperature (about 19-21 C). This wine is absolutely age-worthy, but after decanting it's approachable now. Drink now to 2029.

Look

The colour is a rich, dark garnet with a bright ruby rim. It’s almost completely opaque and has slow moving tears.

Smell

It’s a power house of aromas! You’re greeted right away with the bold smell of stewed prunes and baking spice. Violets, rose petals, ripe plum and soil play a supporting role along with cocoa and mineral notes.

Taste

As intense as it is on the nose, you’ll find the palate has just as much expression. Every layer of flavour presents itself in a big, bold way and there is a lot going on. Ripe red plums, ripe raspberries, currants and black cherry make up the fruit flavours which are supported by cocoa, espresso, sandalwood, fresh picked herbs, raspberry leaf, and cedar. Keep going back to your glass and you’re sure to get even more amazing characteristics. The body is at least medium with a great backbone of acidity and well integrated alcohol. The tannins will feel a bit grippy at first and maybe a little dusty, but they soften on the finish leave a ripe, but also pleasantly bitter flavour that lingers on for quite a while.

Pairing

Choose a hearty, rustic dish with this wine. Portobello mushroom burgers or lamb skewers would pair well.
