A bit unusual, but interesting, the wine has the address of the winery on the front of the label - the postal code and commune in France. Nans-les-Pins is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France, within the Sainte-Baume Natural Park. The designation of the wine is Méditerranée IGP, which encompasses a large area of southeastern France, including the Provence region and some of the Rhône Valley.
IGP designations are used to span AOC regions and allow for the production of wine with less stringent regulations. For example, a wine labeled as Méditerranée IGP can be produced within any of the 10 departments under its authority. Geographically, this IGP overlaps other regions like Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but if the wine is not produced adhering to the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, it may be called Méditerranée.
Many high-end producers will create their flagship wines under AOC status, but also have other brands or tiers of wines that come from these less controlled designations to allow them to plant obscure or international grape varietals, produce different styles of wine that may not be permitted, or simply have an outlet to make accessible wines. Without a prominent designation, these wines are usually less expensive, but don't be fooled, it doesn't mean they aren't delicious! Enjoy by 2021 and serve at room temperature, 18 C.
You don't even have to be near the glass to experience the spicy fruits that waft across your table. There is ample ripe cherry, blackberry and cassis, with peppercorn and nutmeg giving it a pop! Black licorice, Jolly Rancher and blackberry jam and a sweetness and richness to the aromas too. Wait for the entrance of granite, potting soil and earth just near the end!
Smooth and sleek, the wine effortlessly glides across the tongue with a bit of sandy tannins felt in the mid-palate. The fruits are a bit more shy on the palate, and we first notice the woodsy flavours of briar patch, pencil shavings or wood chips. Black cherry, currant and blackberry are wild and earthy tasting, freshly picked! And the tart currants tend to take over in the finish, where there is more of a berry presence. This is medium-light bodied with moderate acidity and a solid backbone delivering a ton of freshness.
We are leaning towards something saucy, but simple. How does a turkey pot pie sound, or shepherd's pie? This comforting combo would make any rainy day better!
