An exclusive find for WineCollective members, this wine isn't available anywhere else in Canada! The 2KM name is in reference to the 2 kilometer parcel of Malbec and and Cabernet Franc, which is home to the grapes harvested for this wine. This small production wine comes from a 148 acre vineyard in Paraje Altamira, a small area in the sub-region of Uco Valley, in the larger region of Mendoza. Although there are many contributing factors to producing this great wine, of particular note is the altitude, at 3,600 feet above sea level. Mendoza is home to some of the highest vineyards in the world, averaging between 2,000-3,600 ft.
Why does altitude matter? The higher the vineyard, the cooler the temperature and the more diurnal temperature change. The coolness and even cooler evenings create fresher wines with better acidity. Vineyards planted on slopes and at the base of mountains have rockier soils, allowing for better drainage and generally a stronger minerality to the wine. The high altitudes also receive more intense sun exposure which will thicken the skins, which results in deeper colour, tannin and intensity. For example, wineries with mountain vineyard sites in Napa, like Howell Mountain or Spring Mountain, have an increased desirability (and price) because these wines tend to age better and have a rarity cache compared to wines produced from the valley floor.
A wine that is ready to enjoy today, but that can also be saved for another couple years. Be sure to decant at least 30 minutes prior to serving, at 17-20 C.
Cherry red with a ruby-hued centre and garnet undertones, it is deep and dark.
Get ready for an adventure that is full of spice, savoury herbs and rustic appeal. Underneath the ripe raspberry, plum and blueberry is a plethora of dark chocolate, pink peppercorns, grilled provence herbs, figs, baking spice, grilled peppers, matchbook and cured meats. We could spend all day with our nose in this glass!
Well balanced through and through, with medium acidity, round and grippy tannins, and a plump and chewy palate. This is a wine that will have mass-appeal, so great for dinner parties and will be sure to impress the picky palates at your table! It is soft at first approach and gives us freshness with red crunchy berries, followed by richer notes of black plum, cassis and sweet oak. There are subtle spices and herbs that come through, but we are able to focus more on the fruit and oak profiles, which flow into a smooth and satisfying finish.
This is a 'show-off' wine, that we think you should proudly serve alongside your favourite cut, or maybe even try to conquer one of those tomahawk steaks worthy of a 5 star dining experience. Be sure to season liberally and serve with the freshest farmers market produce, grilled to perfection.
