Named after South Africa’s most iconic bay, False Bay Vineyards was born out of a desire to make wine with as little interference as possible. False Bay's founder, Paul Boutinot, came to the Western Cape to seek out and rescue grapes from old, balanced and under-appreciated vineyards. Paul would later transform those Cape gems into wines with a minimum of intervention, wild yeast ferments, no acid additions... just fabulous natural wines. The Coastal Region is one of five sub regions located in the Western Cape. Coastal Region reaches north to Darling, Constantia to the south, and Paarl/Stellenbosch to the east. This vast area covers almost half of South Africa's acres under vine. Because this area is so large, it is home to many different micro climates, and as a result, grape varietals. From classic Chenin Blanc to Bordeaux varietals, and of course Syrah! The wines of False Bay Vineyards stay true to this today: using fantastic coastal fruit, naturally balanced grapes and wild yeast ferments abound, with additions avoided, using only sustainable farming techniques, and handpicking every grape that goes into their wine. This beautiful new world Syrah showcases it all, fermented by old-school methods and aged in large wooden casks. These methods are used to embrace the natural beauty and flavour of the wine. A young, full-bodied, overripe raspberry red colour wrapped by a rose crystallin edge.
Give yourself time to enjoy this wine while it opens up and presents all its aromas to you. You'll find blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherry stems, even stewed strawberries! Then spiciness comes with oak, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, leather, baking spice and a subtle smokiness.
This wine gets the party going right away on your palate. It comes in exciting, juicy and fresh with tangy cranberries, pomegranate, wild cherries, red currants and plush plums. It stays fresh as the taste evolves with notes of eucalyptus, and a warm, smokey embrace wraps everything together. The smokiness hangs as peppery flavours enter the forefront of the finish. A delicate mouthfeel with soft, round tannins, which when combined with ample acidity, create the perfect balance.
Sharp, aged and bold cheeses in the form of a dip, extravagant charcuterie board, or bacon mac n' cheese. Provolone, smoked gruyere, mozzarella or well-aged cheddar.
