Profile

Ferraton is a family-run winery producing wines from their vineyards in France's Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph appellations. Founded in 1946, Ferraton has a classic French wine story — where the land and wine are passed on through generations. As a winery, they favour biodynamic winemaking in many of their offerings, which in essence is a holistic way of viewing agriculture that assumes all things are interconnected. This style of winemaking follows four types of days: Root, Fruit, Flower, and Leaf Days. The type of day dictates what can take place in a vineyard, so you aren't harvesting on leaf days, for example. Biodynamics has existed for nearly a century and is a trusted method for many small and large producers around the world.

The varietals in this French white might not be all that familiar to you, but they are absolutely worth getting to know! Vermentino is similar in style to Sauvignon Blanc, so is an easy transition for anyone looking to try something new without getting too adventurous. Originating in Italy, the grape can also be found throughout France, though largely in the Corsica area. When paired together with the more popular, medium-bodied, low tannin Viognier, you get a beautiful blend that is a nicely balanced wine. This 2017 wine is ready to enjoy now and is best served at 9-11 C.

Look

The colour of olive oil, glistening sunshine yellow, and heavier viscosity that sticks to the glass edges when swirled.

Smell

Slightly perfumed with floral notes and potpourri of lilies and roses. There are notes of fresh cut herbs and greenery, like wild flowers and garden aromas. The fruit profile is zesty and clean with a combo of citrus and tart orchard fruits of underripe pear and green apples. With time and some warmth, we sense a steely minerality too!

Taste

Tingly and zippy giving us a fresh and fruity palate with lots of personality. The flavours are tropical and citrus, green pineapple, lime zest, and even some kiwi. The acidity is just right: present and round without being distracting or invasive. The lingering minerality from the nose gives an extra layer of dimension that elevates this wine to the next level. What we really love is the finish — just when you thought it was done, there is lingering notes of floral left on the tongue.

Pairing

Vivacious and young, this wine calls for spring vegetables, fresh herbs, and shellfish — we are thinking something fried like fritto misto. Or a linguine vongole — clams in an olive oil sauce with herbs and lemon.
