This is the best time of year to do a little bit of California dreaming, and we want our dreams filled with coastal vineyards and this stellar limited availability Chardonnay. Santa Barbara County is located within the Central Coast of California and just a short 90 minutes outside of Los Angeles. Wine country here is flanked by two coastal mountain ranges enabling the entire region to overlook the ocean from elevations of less than 100 meters up to over 1100 meters in the hillside vineyards. This variable landscape is perfectly established to create cooler microclimates and craft some remarkably unique wines for the region. This wine is cultivated in the Los Alamos region of Santa Barbara County in the Diatom Bar-M vineyard. Here, these berries were selected from more than 20-year-old vines, forged in a sandy-loam soil, making for slightly weightier fruits with a bit more flesh. This Chardonnay is a brilliant example of its terroir and a beautifully unexpected expression of wine from this piece of the world. This wine is too incredible to wait; start enjoying it now, well chilled to 11 C.
A brilliant light straw hue that glistens in the glass with golden reflections.
Delicate fresh aromas softly unfold. Notes of crisp and just under ripened white fruits come out first with apple, guava, pears, and lightly candied lemon. Subtle hints of white blossoms and wet cement play in the background. As it breathes, it tantalizes the senses with a rich creaminess that intermingles with tropical undertones.
At first sip, we are enchanted as it washes over your palate. A full-bodied texture cascades with crispy golden apple, bright pear, Meyer lemon, and citrus blossoms. The fruits are superbly fresh, but still letting us revel in the velvety richness of Chardonnay. The flavours of the crisp white fruits linger. As the astringency softens tropical notes of peach and passion fruit come rushing to the forefront. A sharp acidity is perfectly in balance with the sensuous textures and ample flavours making a divinely indulgent wine.
Accentuate this wine's decadence over a steaming, gooey baked camembert and roasted garlic crostini. Or try a silky vegetarian Korma with a luxurious coconut rice pilaf.
