Celler del Roure Sant Pere

Tempranillo, Monastrell, Merlot

Valencia

13.5 Alcohol

Introduction

Did you know that Valencia accounts for two-thirds of the rice produced in Spain? The region may be more famous for their 'arroz' than vino, but that is why wine from Valencia is a hidden gem! Vineyards cover about 13,000 hectares and produce about 700,000 hectolitres of wine, which is a very impressive amount. The Sant Pere grapes of Tempranillo, Monastrell, and Merlot vines are grown on clay-calcareous soils and planted on bush vines. You will commonly see vines planted in this bush, aka "goblet style", in desert-like areas where the climate is arid and hot, like California, Spain, South Africa, and Southern France. The vines grow close to the ground and are not staked or supported by trellis, requiring more acreage than most other styles of vine, and do not allow for the use of mechanical harvesting. The benefit is that they do not need irrigation and growing close to the ground helps to keep their temperature moderated. Sant Pere ferments in stainless steel, while the Tempranillo and Monastrell is aged in concrete tanks for 12 months. The Merlot spends 12 months in both French and American oak barrels. The aging process helps to soften the tannins, and the oak will impart light notes of vanilla and toast to the wine. Still young, enjoy by 2021 and serve at 18 C.

How it looks

The colour of ripe raspberries, with a darker and less transparent core.

How it smells

The aromas require a bit of coaxing, so a few swirls or decanting (if possible) is recommended. With some patience, you are rewarded by brambly, dark berries — black cherry, plum, and blackberry are rugged and wild. There is a dusty minerality, like crushed gravel, and spicy notes of black liquorice too.

How it tastes

A Spanish wine with a French accent! This wine takes a trip through South Eastern Spain, where the heat of Mediterranean breezes create zesty wines. Reminiscent of a Languedoc- Roussillon wine, the Sant Pere has a nice Parisian flare, too! The fruit profile on the palate is a bit more tart and emphasizes red berries, like cherry and cranberry, with a hint of spice. An initial play on sweet and tart with a rhubarb crisp, fades to increased prevalence of earthy and mineral notes. As with the nose, this wine takes a bit of time to open up, and offers moderate acidity, tannins, and structure to create great balance.

Recommended food pairing

When exploring new wine regions, it is fun to also explore the corresponding cuisine! Plan a journey to Valencia with rabbit or chicken paella.
