San Juan is a hot and arid wine region that produces an array of both red and white wines, from Bonarda and Malbec, to Chardonnay, and many in between. The ability to achieve great balance and moderate alcohol levels in hot climates, comes with experience and talent. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend here is both vivacious and dramatic, while being made with great finesse! The Signos is exclusive to WineCollective in Canada and we are thrilled to share this wine with you!
The winery is named after a story of a woman who came to San Juan and wrote home to her family describing the region as "paradise endowed with abundant fruits, despite the desert landscape". To the people of Argentina, Callia is synonymous with hope, endurance, and success, and Bodegas Callia celebrates this spirit.
Bodegas Callia is located at the base of the Andes Mountains in the sub-region of Tulum Valley, in the larger region of San Juan. The area is heavily reliant on the irrigation from the San Juan River that winds through the region. Both the river and the vineyards' altitude at over 650 meters allow for viticulture in this otherwise desert-like region. Enjoy by 2021 and at 18 C.
Medium red colouring that is brilliant and ruby at the core, with pinker edges around the rim.
Rich and savoury! We find loads of concentrated fruit aromas from ripe and juicy berries, stewed plums, and blueberry jam. Balancing all the intensity from the berries, is a peppery spice, like fresh cracked peppercorns and an accent of herbs.
This is a bold wine that packs a lot of flavour in a firm punch. There is consistency from the nose, with blueberry jam on toast and plum skins (think the bitter part of a plum). Toasted peppercorn and sweet oak flavours round out the palate, which is soft and silky while being very vibrant. The tannins are a bit gritty and leave a moderate sandy texture, while the acidity is fresh, but not too buoyant. You were taught not to judge a book by its cover, but in this case the wine matches the label!
Finger licking BBQ! Anything with a smoky-sweet sauce and some grill marks, like ribs or ribeye. But if you are a fan of bold and vibrant red wines, you might just like this one on its own!
