Blue Pyrenees Estate Section One

Shiraz

Pyrenees, Victoria

14.5 Alcohol

Introduction

A longstanding WineCollective favourite and recipient of innumerable wine awards from around the world, Blue Pyrenees Estate is an Australian winery that we continue to discover exceptional wines from. Established in 1963 by Remy Martin, Blue Pyrenees is a notable dry, cool climate winery, located in Australia's smallest mainland state Victoria. The Pyrenees region has been home to winemakers since the 1800s and continues to be the site of many of Australia's great vineyards. Blue Pyrenees Estate is, of course, one these wineries and is 100% Australian owned. Spanning over 150 hectares, the Blue Pyrenees land and Chief Winemaker Andrew Koerner are able to produce outstanding Aussie wines. The 2015 'Section One Shiraz' is made from 45+ year old vines that used to go under the name 'Reserve Shiraz'. However, after many years of producing Shiraz that was largely composed of grapes from the Estate's oldest vines (known as Section One), the name was changed. Now we are all able to enjoy award-winning Shiraz from historic vines! No complaining here. The 2015 Section One Shiraz can be enjoyed now with some decanting or cellared until 2024. Serve around 18 C for the best glass.

How it looks

Bright and youthful cherry-hued, and consistent from core to rim.

How it smells

Eucalyptus lets us know that this is an Aussie Shiraz — a giveaway aroma! The spicy notes are peppery and savoury, like steak rub. The fruit profile is muted at first, but opens to plum and wild cherry. There are light, toasted-oaky flavours, with sweet whiffs of vanilla.

How it tastes

This wine is structured and bold, with great balance and weight that provide a solid base for all that flavour! Brambly berries are wild and a bit dirty, with plum, cherry, and currants. The fruity notes end juicier through the finish and mingle with subtle notes of vanilla. The tannins are grippy and sticky, with a drying mouthfeel and cleansing acidity. This wine is a bit brash out of the gate, but softens with decanting or some patience. It can also cellar well into the next decade.

Recommended food pairing

Typical pairings with bold Shiraz are BBQ, steak, and stews. Although this wine is a perfect protein partner, we also like it with sharp, aged cheddar. Offering a decadent cheese with plum preserves would pair really well too.
