Bordeaux, France is a region that is practically synonymous with high-quality red wines, but the lesser-known white Bordeaux blends are utterly delectable too! Red wine is so popular here that it dominates wine production, whereas white wine accounts for just under 10% of the total wine produced in the Bordeaux region. Since France is one of the top global wine producers, that is still a huge amount of glorious juice being produced. With all the attention the reds are getting, these whites are intentionally big and memorable to make sure they stand out.
Clos des Lunes is one of these incredible producers hailing from the region that love whites so much they have come to specialize in them! Their coveted old Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted on the cascading hills of Sauternes. Located in the southwest of Bordeaux, a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. They even boast to have "one of the greatest white wine terroirs" in all of France and we are inclined to agree! Serve this extraordinary expression as soon as you can, chilled to 10 C so you can explore everything it has to offer.
Bright citrus jumps out of the glass with sharp gushing grapefruits, white plums, and the faintest touch of salinity. The complex bouquet unfolds with luscious springtime, while revealing wet grass, honeysuckles, and delicate chamomile. Backed by a divinely subtle sweetness that has us reminiscing about traditional maple-pulled toffee.
This is a big white for flavour! Beautifully light-bodied and dry on entry with commanding citrus notes. We're getting loads of lemon, lime, grapefruit, Granny Smith apple, unripened nectarine, and some seriously sharp golden-berries, all packing a big wallop of acidity right along with them. That springlike freshness that came out resoundingly in the bouquet is echoed faintly on the palate and rounded out with a touch of minerality. This is an experiential wine that will surprise and delight.
Seafood and shellfish all the way here! We want a massive mound of fresh oysters followed by angel hair pasta smothered with plump prawns, and lightly dressed in lemon and butter with fresh parmesan shavings.
