Introduction

The sparkling wine world has become an expansive one. With excellent options available from all corners of the globe, at widely varied price points, there is little excuse anymore to not indulge in bottles of bubbles. When most people think of French sparkling wine, they are likely first going to mention Champagne. However, if you expand your search beyond the Champagne borders, you will find exceptional sparkling wine being made throughout France. In fact, you'll find many wines called Crémant, which is sparkling wine made using the same techniques as Champagne. The Crémant we're featuring is made of Chardonnay grapes in the Burgundy region, just south of Champagne. What is special about Crémant vs Champagne, besides price (which is usually vastly different)? Traditionally, it had a less formidable effervescence and was well-known for being a bit more delicate, or 'creamy' than its bubbly cousin. Today you can find Crémant that ranges from frothy to vivacious. In this case, we're sharing a sparkling Chardonnay, which is one of the main varietals grown in both the Burgundy and Champagne regions. Crémant has quickly taken up a soft spot for us and we're always looking for new bubbles to enjoy. We're excited to share this fine French bottle with you and recommend enjoying it this year sometime, chilled between 5 and 7 C.

How it looks

A bright, pale lemon colour with subtle bubbles providing a perfectly light effervescence.

How it smells

Like the bubbles in the glass, this Chard has a very subtle nose. Sweet, ripe apples and pears sit at the forefront and are nicely complemented by faint toasted nuts and brioche. The fruit definitely takes the lead on this one!

How it tastes

There isn't much else we could want from a sparkling Chardonnay! Very fruit forward with mouthwatering apples and pears, but without the sweetness that can overwhelm. Once you get past the ripe apples, there's slight vanilla that's offset by a delicate minerality. The balance here is a work of art and makes for an irresistible, easy drink. The presence of brioche adds a nice flavour to the mix, which is in part due to the process of autolysis, where the wine is in contact with yeast cells for a duration of time in the bottle.

Recommended food pairing

Crémant works great on its own as an apertif, but will also wonderfully complement deep-fried calamari or Thai noodle salad. This wine can definitely handle a bit of spice!
