Terra Alta is translated as "high lands" from Catalan, and to no surprise, the region is home to some of the country's highest altitudes. The mountains reach elevations of nearly 950 meters, while the vineyards are found on lower lying plateaus and valleys. Interestingly, Pablo Picasso was known to spend summers in the region and many of his paintings depict the picturesque countryside. A mountain was even named after him, La Picossa, separating Terra Alta from the region of Terres de l’Ebre.
Terra Alta has produced wines for centuries. The area is found between the towns of Zaragoza, Tortosa, and Tarragona near the coast, in the Catalonia region. As a frequent thoroughfare, it wasn't just the climate that made Terra Alta perfect for viticulture — it was also convenient. Ancient Romans were recorded to have planted the first vines and later the Knights of Templar were also known to produce wine from these vineyards. Today, Terra Alta's famed neighbour to the east, Priorat, has helped draw warranted attention to the wines of this relatively unknown area. Terra Alta is unique in that it remained fairly isolated and the majority of wine production was consumed locally. Today there is a great mixture of cooperatives and independent wineries, and a combination of both modern technology while following an array of traditional methods. Enjoy by 20201 and serve chilled to 8 C.
