Profile

Terra Alta is located in the larger wine region of Catalonia (Catalunya in Catalan and Cataluña in Spanish), where wine has been made for over a thousand years. The Mediterranean climate is perfect for vineyards, which the Romans discovered long before the region of Catalonia itself was established. There are a number of different styles of wine produced here and the wines of Catalonia accounts for almost 25% of Spain's total production. Bold, tannic red wines made with Grenache are highly sought after from the region of Priorat, while Cava (Spain's sparkling wine) is roughly 50% of all wine made in Catalonia and predominately from Penedes.

Barcelona is the capital of the region and because of its size, history, and Mediterranean port, it has become a hub for oenophiles and wine tourism. Terra Alta is one of 10 regions within Catalonia, and produces red, white, and rosé wines. Being just a two hour scenic drive from Barcelona makes this viticultural area a great destination to explore the wine and food of Catalonia. Enjoy today, or by 2021, chilled slightly to 18 C.

Smell

With one inhale, you are transported into a lush forest full of wild berries and greenery. The aromas are a perfect combination of berry, floral, earth, and herbs. We can find a mixture of currants, tobacco, soil, juniper, menthol, thyme, tomato stalk, and the perfect pop of cracked peppercorn.

Taste

Black currant, black cherry, and wild raspberry offer a wild, brambly and rustic base of juicy and rugged fruit. The medium+ body carries smooth and sticky tannins across the palate, along with a slow building acidity causing our mouths to salivate after the first sip. This dry wine further accentuates a light bitterness, like eating plum skin. We find remnants of tobacco, pepper, and thyme through the lingering finish.

Pairing

Catalonian fare is based mostly on seafood, pork, and chicken, as beef is a rarity and not found in many traditional meals. Like most other Spanish regions, there is an emphasis on the staples: rice, beans, peppers, and tomatoes, identified regionally by specific varietals, cooking methods, and spices. 'Fricandó' is one of few beef dishes, fried, and served with mushrooms — a great match for this wine!
