Welcome to the heart of the Côte de Beaune and the historic estate of the Lebreuil family! Situated in the appellation of Savigny-Les-Beaune, midway between the villages of Beaune and Aloxe-Corton, this third-generation estate was founded by Paul Lebreuil in 1935. Now under the stewardship of son Pierre and grandson Jean-Baptiste, the Lebreuil family focuses primarily on Pinot Noir grown on their organically-farmed 13 hectare estate. Vineyards are managed in the pragmatic "lutte raisonnée" style, avoiding the use of any unnatural interventions whenever possible; for example, they have not used any herbicides since 2003!
While the family does have holdings in several of the area's Premier Cru vineyards, the AOC Savigny-Les-Beaune is a great introduction to the style of the region, and displays all the charm and complexity that has made Burgundy famous.
Refrigerate for 15 minutes before serving with a brief decant, or cellar for 5-7 years.
Clear, bright ruby with a lighter rim - a dead giveaway for the grape variety. Still very youthful in colour with lots of life ahead of it.
Classic Burgundy on the nose, perfect for lovers of traditional examples of Pinot Noir. Leads off with loads of fresh cherry, complimented by lifted floral aromatics that give way to a mineral undertone - think wet pavement. A slight hint of the "barnyard" notes that Burgundy is known for, but the fruit is the star of the show.
The fresh cherry from the nose repeats here, and is joined by even more red fruit like tart raspberry and a hint of strawberry. It's light on the palate, but quite complex, with structure provided more by acid than tannin. But the tannins are there - just soft and lingering on the long, almost ethereal finish. It's fantastic now, but if you have the patience, it will get even better with some cellaring. Don't be afraid to decant this wine for a few hours, too. It's still in its infancy and would benefit from a bit of air to really highlight the aromatics.
A classic wine deserves a classic pairing. Go all-in with duck or pork rillette. Or flip the script and pair with cedar-planked salmon to draw out the faint smokey notes of the wine.
