Profile

"Bon appétit!" can be heard across dinner tables around the world. It has become universally known as a pre-dining expression of joy and gratitude. Since wine is an essential mealtime companion, we were naturally intrigued by a wine sharing the name with the French exclamation. Once we looked further and saw that Bon Appétit is a Merlot, we were even more excited! Merlot is a meal's best friend, thanks in part to its medium body and acidity. If there ever was a red wine to keep on hand, Merlot should be at the top of your list.

Originating from the European designated IGP of Pays d'Oc, the Bon Appétit Merlot hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, which is one of the largest wine growing areas in the country. Wine is strictly controlled and regulated, so differentiating between growing regions can quickly become overwhelming. We mention the origins of this wine since it comes from a high-production area where some of France's most well-known vines grow, though most of the region falls under France's strict AOC certification. However, lucky for us, wines from Pays d'Oc results in a lower price point, with similarly great quality. We can't think of a better wine to introduce yourself to this region of France and all the wonderful wine it can offer! Bon Appétit is ready to enjoy now and can be served at 17 C.

Look

A medium, glistening ruby red with subtle raspberry rimmed edges.

Smell

We are immediately met with dark, stewed fruits, like when you're making homemade jams. Black cherries and rich, ripe plums are most dominant, but finish with more earthy, oak notes.

Taste

Nice and plummy! Black plums with a little cassis backbone, bright acidity, savoury herbs, and slight hint of baking spice. The cassis adds a nice tartness mid-palate that gives the wine character, while still being light enough to be comfortably medium bodied with a graceful medium finish. This Merlot is slightly on the dry side and thanks to its sandy tannins, leaves us instantly ready for the next sip.

Pairing

Perfect for a quiet night in front of the fire or with a cheese plate and some friends playing cards. Snacks not cutting it? Fire up the oven and have a "build your own" pizza night with chicken, peppers, mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, and homemade tomato sauce.
