Valle Calchaqui, Salta, Argentina
Alc. 13.9 %
Malbec from Argentina has been a favourite among wine-loving crowds since it first appeared on the Canadian wine scene over a decade ago, and its popularity seemed to explode overnight - for good reason! The grape's original home is in Bordeaux, France, but there it tends to take a back seat to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In Argentina, it's the true star of the show.
Some of the most captivating examples come from high altitude sites, which allow the grapes to ripen fully while retaining a refreshing and balancing acidity. Bodegas Amalaya's Territorio Malbec is a perfect example of the varietal. The winery is located in Salta in Northern Argentina, which boasts some of the highest altitude vineyards in the world at 1,700 meters (some 600 meters higher than Europe's highest). Wineries in Salta account for a mere 1% of Argentina's total production, and the weather is extreme - daily temperatures often fluctuate by as much as 20 degrees Celsius! But where vines struggle, the resulting wines shine.
Enjoy now or over the next 2-3 years at a perfect 18 C.
Dark ruby with an opaque purple, nearly black core.
Very expressive right out of the bottle, with ripe plum, blackberry, and blueberry compote. Beneath the dark fruit, there's a hint of something herbaceous - it reminds us of tomato leaf, black tea, and even a touch of cocoa. With some time in the glass, it blends into a seamless whole, with the blue and red fruit as the star of the show.
Exploding with all the blue and black fruit that Malbec lovers have come to expect, but with a lovely, bright line of acid running through it - think blueberry jam and lemon zest! There's enough freshness to keep everything balanced and energetic through a long finish. Still very youthful and zippy, this would be at home at any BBQ and could even take a slight chill.
BBQ all day! Enough fruit and structure to pair well with anything off the grill - think ribs, grilled sausages, or skirt steak (with chimichurri, of course). But if the weather's not cooperating, pair it with a hearty stew, or just curl up in front of a fire and enjoy!
