It's not uncommon for wineries to have many aspects to their business besides the retail selling of their bottles. You can visit vineyards around the world and stay in luxury accommodation, eat exceptional food, and spend your days learning about and exploring the terroir that produces the very wine in your glass. New Zealand's Cable Bay Vineyards is one of those wineries and they are doing an impressive job serving visitors on Waiheke Island. Their land boasts sweeping views of the sea, rolling vineyard hills, and amenities to accommodate weddings and conferences. It's a dream location serving dreamlike wine! What more can you ask for?
Founded in 1998, Cable Bay Vineyards hit the ground running by winning gold for their first vintage of Chardonnay in 2002 at the International Wine Challenge in London, UK. Since then it has been their mission to continue producing outstanding wine from their three vineyards, one of which is newly dedicated to organics. Coming from their namesake Cable Bay Vineyard, we are excited to share both their 2017 and 2018 Pinot Gris. These wines are ready to enjoy now and should be served at a nicely chilled 8-9 C.
Beautiful pale gold with a light, crystal clear rim.
If a wine can smell like springtime, this is it! Inviting notes of almond, white cherry, and honeysuckle have us ready to enjoy some time out in the sun. Not overbearing with fruit, as there are subtle hints of cinnamon and spice, but overall a refreshing, light aroma.
Like most Pinot Gris, this is a drier wine that still showcases some incredible fruit flavours. Crunchy, ripe Granny Smith apples give a slight tartness that works wonderfully with the pear and gentle peach undertones. The fruit here is balanced very well with the delicate roasted almond, cinnamon, and rose flavours. The higher acidity isn't overbearing and lends itself to a longer, but pleasant finish that will have you finishing a glass in no time!
Pinot Gris is perfectly matched with your favourite seafood dish. This is the time to break out your favourite halibut, snapper, or tilapia recipe. Lemon garlic baked tilapia with a fresh arugula salad and zesty vinaigrette would be delicious!
