Throw out everything you think you know about Merlot, and pour yourself a glass of Cupolone from the legendary Paolo Conterno! We're thrilled to share this gem with you, as it represents a lesser-known side of this historic producer. The family, under founder Paolo Conterno, got their start in Barolo way back in 1886. They quickly gained a reputation for outstanding Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto at their Casa della Ginestra estate. When fourth-generation Giorgio Conterno took the reigns, they began searching for a site in Tuscany, and knew immediately upon seeing Tenuta Ortaglia that they had found what they were looking for.

Planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese for reds, the Tenuta Ortaglia site is ideally suited to producing a style of wines that are sometimes referred to as "Super Tuscans." Because they're made from international grapes not permitted in the stricter DOC and DOCg systems, these wines must be labelled under the much broader category of IGT, even though they often surpassed their more traditional competitors in both quality and price. These are some seriously good wines! And seriously age-worthy. We'd recommend cellaring for another 5-7 years, but if you can't wait, we don't blame you! Just decant for a few hours and serve at about 18 C.

Intense, show-stopping aromatics of cigar, bramble, dry leaves, earth, ripe plum, stewed cherries, warm baking spice, and cocoa. There's so much going on here - this is the kind of wine to take your time with, and appreciate the nuances as it evolves in the glass.

Full-bodied and structured, with great texture and beautifully fine, integrated tannins. There's sweet lingering fruit, with notes of plum and cherry, all balanced by a nice lifted acidity. The finish is long and pure, and echoes the aromatic notes of cigar of dry leaves. Beautiful!

For a perfect pairing, try this with a Northen Italian classic: Osso Buco served over risotto alla milanese. Or go vegetarian with bucatini in a wild mushroom and cream sauce - the simple, hearty flavours will make the wine the star of the show!
