Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
The Chalkboard range of wines from California draws inspiration from the idea of "daily special" wines served by the glass or carafe and advertised on hand-lettered chalkboards in casual restaurants and bistros around the world. These are wines that can be enjoyed at any time, in any circumstance — a casual glass on the patio before dinner, or with simple, satisfying weeknight dishes. We sometimes call them "Tuesday wines", as they're delicious, approachable, and have no need to wait for a special occasion or a perfect pairing! Aside from making for deeply satisfying wines, the Chalkboard range also highlights a growing trend in winemaking: the rise of the virtual winery. Because high startup costs can keep talented young winemakers from owning their own vineyards or equipment, the need for a more accessible way to enter the industry gave rise to the virtual winery. Using purchased grapes (often from highly-regarded sources whose own, much more expensive bottling are protected by non-disclosure agreements) and rented winemaking space, these enterprising brands are able to offer high-quality wines at surprisingly good prices. At WineCollective, we're always on the hunt for these over-delivering gems and are thrilled to pass them on to you! Pop this crowd-pleasing red blend in the fridge for 15 minutes, and enjoy now or over the next two years.
In the glass, the Chalkboard Red Blend is vibrant raspberry-red, with a bright cherry core and pale rim.
The nose is pure summer goodness — warm sweet fruit, with tart raspberries and cherry leading the way, backed by a hint of black currant and raspberry leaf to add a herbaceous freshness.
Bushels of berries on the palate of this dry, medium-bodied red, with cherries, raspberries, red currants, and just a hint of spice. Don't let the lighter body fool you, as this is packed with flavour and has excellent freshness on the finish. Easy drinking and vibrant, this is a perfect patio red.
Try this on a summer day, very lightly chilled, and pair with charcuterie and soft cheeses before dinner. Looking for something more substantial? Serve alongside cedar-planked salmon or grilled pork chops with a cherry and red wine reduction.
