Profile

Consentido is the project of Bodegas La Purisima in Yecla, Spain. Established in 1946 by a group of local grape-growers, their desire to showcase the high quality of wines that are possible in the region culminated in Yecla's recognition as an official D.O. (Denominacion de Origin) in 1975. But grape-growing is an ancient tradition in Yecla, dating back well over 2000 years! Grapevines struggle to find moisture here, and are often planted far apart and pruned traditionally as bush vines. They produce grapes with intense colours, aromas, and flavours, all of which come through in the wines!

We loved these wines so much we selected 3 for our members: Macabeo (an important local white grape), Merlot, and Syrah. All three are aged in stainless steel, and express pure fruit characteristics and fantastic depth of flavour. In all of their wines, Bodegas La Purisima utilizes sustainable viticultural practices to ensure the health of the vineyard and surrounding ecosystem. This 2018 Syrah is ready for you to enjoy now at 18 C.

Look

Overall a classic Syrah: inky, purple-hued ruby red.

Smell

A beautifully fragrant Syrah with warm spicy notes balanced with fresh, deeply hued fruits. Blackberry, blueberry, currants, and dried plums are present and finished with soft spicy notes of pepper and herbs.

Taste

Syrah is typically a forward-punching wine, in that you get a lot of flavour in the initial sip, which dissipates to a long, clean finish. This Syrah from Consentido is no exception to that rule! The rich, deep fruits from the nose are found on the palate as well, with blackberry, black currant, and black olive. The tannins here are grippy, but approachable, with a mouth-watering acidity. The finish is smooth and peppery, with hints of sage and pink peppercorn. Finally rounded out with a subtle sweetness, this Syrah is an exciting red to explore!

Pairing

Historically, Syrah is a great companion to grilled meats and vegetables. This is a great time to get some steak skewers on the grill with lots of onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
