Treana Blanc

Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne

Central Coast, California

14.5 Alcohol

Introduction

When Chuck Hope moved his young family to Paso Robles in 1978, there was no indication that this region of California's central coast had any potential as a quality-driven wine producing region. At the time, the area was dominated by orchards, but it soon became apparent that the grapes the Hope family were growing and selling in bulk could be put to better use. By 1987, Chuck and his brother had established Hope Farms Winery and were bottling their wines under their own label. They launched the Treana brand in 1996, the name chosen to pay tribute to the three primary influences of the region: the land itself, the warm California sun, and the cooling ocean breezes. This white blend is a fantastic example of the potential of Rhône grape varieties in the Central Coast. Made from equal parts of Viognier and Marsanne with a dash of Roussanne, 80% of the blend is fermented in oak, while the balance is fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness. After fermentation, the final blend is aged in mostly neutral French oak months before release. The end result is a delicious and textural example of a new world take on a classic Rhône blend! Enjoy now at a cool 16 C, or cellar for 5-7 years.

How it looks

Treana Blanc pours a rich, vibrant golden yellow - immediately showcasing the use of oak in the winemaking process.

How it smells

Huge aromas right out of the gate, with ripe orchard fruits like pear and peach, with hints of dried apricots, white flowers, lanolin, and chamomile tea. The oak is well integrated, with aromas of butterscotch and vanilla that complement the fruit without overpowering it.

How it tastes

Fuller bodied, but not heavy - this wine is proof that intensity of flavour and body can go hand-in-hand with refreshing acidity. The texture is rich and glossy, and the long finish has flavours of golden apple, pear, bengal spice, butterscotch, and lemon custard. The peppy acidity runs throughout, and keeps this intense wine from feeling weighty.

Recommended food pairing

Try Treana Blanc as an alternative to an oaked Chardonnay, and pair accordingly! The intensity of this wine calls for richer food, like butter-poached lobster or chicken normandy in a herb-infused cream sauce.
