Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère
Occasionally we come across a wine we enjoy so much, and that so perfectly captures a grape, style or region, that we can't resist buying everything we can get our hands on. The fact that the name of our latest such find translates to "The Magical Creature" and features a unicorn on the label was just too perfect! The icing on the cake for L'Etre Magique Bordeaux is the vintage: 2016 was stunning across the board, so to find an example like this is truly a treat. L'Etre Magique is from Maison de Grand Esprit, the project of Bordeaux-born Florent Gauthier, who began his formal winemaking education at the age of 18. He has worked in vineyards throughout France, as well as in Australia, Chile, Argentina, and California. This broad reach of experience brings a global perspective to his wines, which combine the best aspects of their traditional roots with modern technique. L'Etre Magique is a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Carménère. It's delicious now with an hour or so in a decanter, but it will continue to evolve for the next 7-10 years. Serve at a cool 18 C.
Deep, brilliant ruby.
Expressive nose of ripe blue and black fruit, cedar, and black tea. With a bit of air, aromas of baking spices emerge, along with an underlying hint of umami reminiscent of dried mushroom. There's an appealing menthol note to add freshness to all the ripe fruit - in short, it smells fantastic!
On the palate, we get all the fresh fruit notes from the nose, along with a nice firm structure that will assist in aging. The tannins are developed and fine, and there's a nice lifted acidity on the finish that keeps the wine fresh. Classically structured and bold, this is a fantastic example of Bordeaux from a great vintage!
Hearty braised short ribs or a French country classic like cassoulet would be perfect with this rich red, or opt for an earthy vegetarian dish like mushroom risotto.
