Profile

Côtes de Gascogne, in the southwest of France, is home to some of the wine world's most exciting finds. Though it was long discounted as the source of mostly generic table wines, change has been brewing - and the Cuvée Marine from Pyrène is a fantastic example of what's possible in the region! It's made from a blend of traditional local grapes (Colombard and Gros Manseng, both of which are still primarily used to produce Armagnac, the region's famous brandy) and international superstar Sauvignon Blanc. The Cuvée Marine name is tribute to the fact that the grapes were grown in the western, Atlantic-influenced part of the region. Here, southwest of Bordeaux, the cooling influence of the ocean preserves high levels of natural acidity in grapes, and allows for the production of crisp, refreshing whites.

Colombard and Gros Manseng may not be familiar to most wine lovers, but they pair beautifully with the Sauvignon in this blend. Colombard lends a crisp freshness to the wild fruit, and Gros Manseng adds weight and texture. The result is a delightfully dry, thirst-quenching white! Enjoy at a well-chilled 8 C within the next two years.

Look

Pale gold in the glass, with glints of green - fresh and vibrant!

Smell

Fruit to the fore, with plenty of punchy white and pink grapefruit from the Sauvignon Blanc, along with the more typical French notes of green apple, lemon, and pear. There's a distinct mineral note on the nose, along with hints of floral, like spring apple blossoms.

Taste

Light and fresh on the palate, with juicy acidity and plenty of citrus flavours of grapefruit, lemon, and lime. There's some softer tropical fruit flavours as well, with hints of papaya and mango, along with orchard fruit like pear and peach. The finish is dry and lingering, inviting another sip. This is a perfect aperitif wine!
