Telmo Rodríguez Lanzaga

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano

Rioja

14 Alcohol

Introduction

Telmo Rodriguez, the man behind the spectacular Bodegas Lanzaga, may well be one of Spain's most famous winemakers - and for good reason! His commitment to working exclusively with native grape varieties and to championing a sense of place in wines, has impacted the direction of Spanish winemaking since he first began his company in the mid-1990s. Since then, he's worked on projects throughout northern Spain, most notably in Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Bodegas Lanzaga is in the former, and drinks like a love letter to the tradition of small scale, agricultural wine production.

Located in the town of Lanziego in Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Lanzaga is comprised of 15 hectares of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano. The bush-pruned vines are farmed organically, and grapes are harvested entirely by hand before being fermented with wild yeasts and aged in oak for 14 months. If you have the patience, the 2014 vintage has incredible potential to age and will improve over the next 10-12 years. Serve at 18 C.

How it looks

Medium garnet in colour, with a pale, clear rim.

How it smells

The Bodegas Lanzaga is beautifully perfumed, with aromas of cherry, dried violets, cedar, and clove. Youthful primary fruit notes are beginning to give way to elegant dry fruit, tobacco, and dusty earth, — but there's still plenty of Tempranillo's signature raspberry and cherry.

How it tastes

Medium bodied and silky smooth, with fine, integrated tannin and plenty of fresh acidity. The palate leans more towards young fruit flavours, suggesting this wine can age gracefully for many more years. It's refined and balanced now, with plenty of elegant structure and fantastic fruit.

Recommended food pairing

Try this delicious Rioja with one of Spain's most famous foods - Jamon Iberico! The salty, fatty meat will contrast beautifully with the juicy fruit notes of the wine while coaxing out the savoury notes of dried herbs. For a main, think pork, duck, or wild game — something to emphasize the earthy, woodsy notes in the wine. Or enjoy on its own by a fall bonfire!
