Profile

At WineCollective, we're always on the hunt for exciting new wine experiences, so when we hear about interesting, local grape varieties that are being championed by quality-focused producers, we're all ears! We were obviously intrigued by this white wine from Bodegas Vegamar, made from an often-overlooked indigenous grape called Merseguera. Vegamar is located in Valencia on Spain's Mediterranean coast, and they've emerged as the most vocal proponent of this grape. Though it's historically been used as a high-yielding grape for white blends, when grown in a coastal region like Valencia, wines made from Merseguera can be bright, flavourful and focused!

Huella translates to "footprint or mark," and the name reflects the winemaker's desire to accurately translate the grape's qualities into the finished wine. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged without oak, the Huella de Merseguera is crisp and refreshing with plenty of character. Serve at 8 C and enjoy over the next 2-3 years.

Smell

This bright golden-yellow wine opens with aromas of lemon drop candies, ripe peach, and melon, all fresh fruit and citrus. As it warms slightly in the glass, notes of dry straw and hibiscus flowers emerge, adding warmth and complexity.

Taste

On the palate, the Huella de Merseguera has bright, vibrant acidity to support the smooth texture and ripe fruit flavours. More peach and pear are present, with green apple and ripe lemon, backed by a beautiful mineral tension. There's loads of complexity here, but it's never weighty, finishing fresh and lively, inviting another sip. Lovers of old-world whites from northern Italy and southern France will find plenty to love here, but this is a crowd-pleaser by nature!

Pairing

Seafood is the natural fit, given its abundance in the region. Try with simply-prepared steamed mussels or grilled spot prawns. The wine has enough body and texture to stand up to fuller dishes, too - pork or poultry would work equally well, as would anything in a cream-based sauce.
