Named after the nearby village of Minerve, which is named after the Greek goddess Minerva, Minervois is an appellation within the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region in southwestern France. Languedoc-Roussillon is a coastal region that borders the Mediterranean Sea. The vast appellation of Minervois is located further inland, near other well-known appellations, like Limoux (sparkling wine!) and north of Corbières. There are a total of 36 appellations within the Languedoc, and Minervois covers just over 5,000 hectares.
The majority of the wine produced here is red, with only 2% white and 4% rosé. Of all the red varietals produced, Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache are dominant and comprise the majority of all production, with lesser amounts of Cinsault and Carignan and rarer yet Lledoner Pelut. The wines are heavily influenced by the coast, with the Mediterranean offering hot summers and harsh winters. Most red wines from Minervois are best enjoyed 2-4 years after bottling, open today or hold a couple more years. Enjoy at a cool room temperature of 16 C.
The wine is flamboyant with ripe red berries and lots of intrigue—the medley of cherry, raspberry and plum mix with secondary notes of leather and spices.
A harmonious and effortless wine that appears simple at first sip but develops with a bit of time and patience. Elegant red fruits mixed with brambly flavours and continuing leather and spice from the nose are complementary and blend seamlessly. Medium weight with moderate acidity and pleasing tannins that offer a touch of grip to the palate. The finish is mild, lingering lightly with remnants of red berries.
