Melon de Bourgogne
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, France
Alc. 12.5 %
We love the wines of France's Loire Valley, but if you've never tried any, this Muscadet Sèvre et Maine from Domaine Landron is a great place to start! Muscadet, made from a French grape called Melon de Bourgogne, is often the answer to the question, "What should we drink with oysters?" One sip will tell you why: the wines are zippy and elegant, with a steely minerality that perfectly compliments fresh shellfish.
Jo Landron, the current owner and winemaker at the estate, inherited the land originally planted by his father and uncle in 1945. After abandoning the use of pesticides in the late 1980s, Jo then made the natural next steps and converted all their vineyards to organic farming in the 1990s and then to biodynamics in the early 2000s. Since then, the goal has been simple: to create the greatest wines possible while focusing on the health of the vineyards and the environment.
Serve this vibrant, dry white at 10 C and enjoy over the next 2-4 years.
This pale, straw-coloured wine has aromas of lemon, green apple, and pear, complemented by a minerality that reminds us of wet stone or gravel. There's a lifted floral note as well, reminiscent of acacia and jasmine.
Elegant and fresh on the palate, with bright, lemony acidity and a long, dry finish. This embodies the idea of intensity without weight. It's quite delicate despite the fact that it's bursting with flavour—a perfect alternative to other high-acid whites like Sauvignon Blanc.
While fresh oysters or other shellfish are the go-to for Muscadet, this wine would also work perfectly with sushi or sashimi or would be complemented beautifully by a lemongrass-scented Thai curry.
