The wine region of Marlborough has taken the French grape, Sauvignon Blanc, and turned it into New Zealand’s signature variety. It might seem like New Zealand is a “Crowded House” of Sauvignon Blanc offerings, which just means you must drink through a lot to find the wines that stand out from the crowd. This is one of those stand-out wines.

Crowded House is the sister brand to Catalina Sounds, which has a solid reputation for producing premium quality wines in Marlborough. The Crowded House label is their more approachable line of wines, offering high quality at a great price.

Meant to be consumed young and fresh, we recommend drinking now after chilling to about 10-12 C. It’s an easy sipping wine for a fun night at home playing board games and having a few laughs with good friends.

It may surprise you that ageing this Sauvignon Blanc is an option if you’re interested. Here’s what the winery has to say about cellaring: “At its aromatic peak for the first two years of its life, then taking on more richness and aromatic complexity.” If you want to pick up a couple of extra bottles and see how the wine develops, we recommend drinking one now, opening the next one in 2020 and saving one for 2022… if you have the patience!

The aromatics will smack you right in the nose! So much white grapefruit, Meyer lemon and fresh cut grass. The pungent bell pepper smell is absent from the nose which was a happy surprise, as sometimes it can be overwhelming and distract from more supple flavours.

All the racy acidity and fresh, sweet citrus you want in a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is there, but without the over-the-top herbaceous quality you may have come to expect. Dig deeper and you’ll notice the softness of ripe tropical fruit with balanced texture and alcohol. It may remind you a little more of a French style Sauvignon Blanc, and definitely over-delivers on quality.

Pair this fresh wine with a fresh dish. Try a spring garden salad with a lime vinaigrette topped with Cajun chicken or pick up an order of spicy Thai take-out on your way home from work.
