Profile

Les Lunelus Rouge is the second of two fantastic wines from family-owned Domaine Pierre Angier that we're excited to share with WineCollective members! Made from an intriguing blend of Cabernet Franc, Gamay, and Côt (aka Malbec), it comes from the estate's vineyards in Touraine, in France's Loire Valley.

The Loire Valley produces a dizzying array of different wine styles, but for reds, the two-star grapes are Gamay and Cabernet Franc. In Touraine, where Domaine Pierre Angier is located, Gamay makes up over 60% of red wine production. The estate is part of a group that bears the tongue-twisting name of The Confrérie des Vignerons de Oisly et Thésée, a small cooperative of winegrowers. Founded in 1961, the Confrérie (French for 'brotherhood') began with the goal of producing high-quality, estate-bottled wines from the member's harvests. Enjoy this medium-bodied red over the next 4-5 years at a cool 18 C.

Smell

Gamay is known for exuberant fruit aromas, and it shines in this blend. There's plenty of blackberries, dried cherries, and sweeter notes of raspberry jam and chocolate-covered strawberries. The Cabernet Franc lends a leafy, herbaceous note, and there are hints of smoke lingering in the background.

Taste

Despite all the sweet fruit aromas and flavours, Les Lunelus Rouge is dry and medium bodied. The tannins are sandy and fine, supporting the fruit without overwhelming the palate. Flavours of raspberry, plum, and sweet tea mingle with an earthiness that adds depth and structure to the plush, juicy finish.

Pairing

This wine's medium body makes it very flexible for pairing, but a beef and mushroom pie made with slow-braised, shredded short ribs would draw out some of the more savoury notes in the wine.
