Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier
We're longtime fans of the wines of Saint Cosme, but this is the first chance we've had to showcase any of their small-production white wines. Located just north of the village of Gigondas in France's Southern Rhône Valley, Saint Cosme's history stretches back to at least 1415. It's been owned by the same family since 1490 - a staggering 14 generations of winemaking tradition! The current generation farms 15 hectares of vines that are about 60 years old on average. Little James Basket Press white is a fifty-fifty blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, fermented and aged in stainless steel. The Sauvignon Blanc contributes citrus acidity and aromatic intensity, while the Viognier lends riper fruit flavours and texture. The result is a delicious and approachable white that can be enjoyed year-round! Serve at about 10 C and enjoy over the next 3-5 years.
Vibrant aromas of grapefruit, apricot and lychee, along with richer passionfruit, are complemented by elegant floral aromatics. It's fresh and inviting, with hints of jasmine and bengal spice.
Medium bodied, intense and dry, with more pink grapefruit and apricot, along with green apple and mango. The fruit shines on the palate, and the finish is fresh and vibrant. Light enough to be enjoyed on its own, but with more than enough character to stand up to food. Delicious and fresh!
For a starter, match the Little James Basket Press with soft cheeses or simple salads, or try this with delicate fish dishes like halibut or sole served with a lemon and dill cream sauce.
