Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet
Santa Rosa, California
Katie Carter has been a star winemaker for the legendary Boisset Collection for 14 years, so it’s no wonder that she was chosen to head the group’s American Vintage label. This Napa winery is one of thirteen estates in the Secret Indulgence collaboration between Jean-Charles Boisset and winemakers at his French and Californian properties. And indeed, indulgence is an apt description for these bold, seductive wines. American Vintage Proprietary Red is a blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, with just a touch each of Alicante Bouschet and Carignan. The fruit is sourced from vineyards in Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, and Lodi. The blend highlights all the charms of bold, modern California reds, with plenty of jammy red and blue fruits and peppery spice. It's soft enough to enjoy on its own, but it'll be right at home served alongside anything off the grill. Enjoy over the next 5-6 years at about 18 C.
Rich and decadent on the nose, with loads of jammy red fruit, raspberry pie, and blackberry compote. Sweet baking spice mingles with cracked black pepper and hints of semi-sweet baking chocolate, with a waft of campfire smoke and graphite.
Rich and full-bodied, with a silky, opulent texture. It's all about the fruit, with more raspberry and blackberry jam, alongside red currants, plum, and boysenberry. The finish is dry and spicy, with more of the cracked black pepper we found on the nose. There's enough vibrant acidity to keep it balanced and fresh despite the sweet jammy fruit. An all-around blockbuster of a red blend from California!
Pair this with anything off the grill, from casual burgers or smokies, to ribs in sweet and spicy bbq sauce, to upscale lamb chops or beef tenderloin!
