Goriška Brda, Slovenia
Alc. 13 %
If you're familiar with Slovenian wine at all, you're most likely familiar with Goriska Brda (Gore-EESH-ka Bur-dah). Technically just referred to as 'Brda' these days, it is located in the Western corner and often referred to as the Tuscany of Slovenia for its abundance of orchards, rolling hills, and hilltop villages. Nestled between mountain ranges to the East and the North, Brda's Mediterranean climate provides plenty of rainfall and hot summers. While it is not directly on the coast, the region benefits from cooling winds from the sea and the Alps.
Out of all the Slovenian regions, Brda boasts the most medals and awards per hectare for their wines. Winemaking is a part of everyday life here as most residents have a small vineyard of their own, where they also often grow olives and cherries. White wines from Brda are known to be unmistakably crisp and lively, and 'Giocato' (jo-KAHT-o) is no exception as its name means to play and have fun. We'll cheers to that! Serve now at a cool 8 C.
A few swirls in the glass and we are loving the luminous pale yellow colour. A bit shy at first, the aromas take a moment to present themselves. Asian pears accompany a lemony citrus note and slight minerality that lure us in. A delicate floral element reminds us of early springtime afternoons.
Vibrant and refreshing, we are immediately delighted by the thirst-quenching notes of green Granny Smith apples, stone fruits, and lemongrass that greet us. Rounded out by hints of white flowers, a slight minerality, and a touch of lime-zest. Light to medium bodied with a generous acidity that leaves us wanting more with a ripe fruit finish that is dry and balanced. A perfect example of the distinctly crisp and fresh whites out of Goriska Brda!
Perfect for any night of the week, this will go great with your favourite spiced fish dish or a light pasta with basil.
