It's not unusual to hear of a third or fourth-generation winemaker who has grown up surrounded by the culture of winemaking who then, in turn, decides to carry on this family tradition. The story behind Joseph Castan Fine Wine is driven by the same passion for wine with a brief 100-year interval between family winemakers.
Vianney Castan's great grandfather, Joseph, began producing wine at his modest winery back in 1907. For years, his wines were praised and appreciated until in 1956 when France was hit by what was referred to as a "white hell"; with record low temperatures, snow, and frost that caused irreparable damage to Castan's vineyard. It wasn't until 100 years later when Vianney and his wife Emilie, fuelled by their own dedication to viticulture, decided to rekindle the torch and establish their own winery. Today, it is their mission to share quality wines from the South of France with wine-lovers all over the world. Ready to serve now at 12 C.
We are immediately charmed by the luminous medium straw colour and delicate aromas that drift from the glass. Lovely Chardonnay stone-fruit notes of nectarine, peach, and apricot intermingle. There is also a floral element that reminds us of springtime apple blossoms or honeysuckle.
Elegance is the perfect namesake for this soft, round, and subtle Chardonnay! The notes of white nectarine, peach, and apricot become stronger as they cover our palate. We also find a hint of citrus peel that is quickly followed by a pleasant wet-stone minerality. Medium bodied with a clean and crisp acidity and persistent finish, this has us dreaming of days spent in the backyard in the sun.
Pair this with your favourite grilled fish or lemony chicken dish. Not that hungry? Soft to semi-soft cheeses will shine next to this.
