Warmth, unpretentious sophistication, sense of tradition…these are descriptors that can be applied to the wines from Costières de Nîmes, the southernmost wine growing area in the Rhone Valley. The region is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes region, at the border of Provence and the Languedoc. Rich in history and culture, with Spanish and Moroccan influences, wines from the Costières de Nîmes are food friendly with a casual elegance. This example is a classic Southern Rhône blend (Syrah 75%, Grenache 25%) and is robust, spicy, and perfectly suited to the rustic local cuisine.

The term 'costières' is a geographic reference that refers to the gentle slopes and generally deep, stony/red clay soils. When not planted with vines, this land can be found to be populated with rosemary, lavender, and thyme. Interestingly, the region was an appellation of the Languedoc before it was moved, in 2004, to the Rhone Valley. This wine should be served at 18 C and is ready to drink from now until 2026.

On the nose it is fruity and floral, with notes of dark chocolate-covered cherries, strawberry jam, blackberries, currant, dusty earth, and warm baking spice.

On the palate this wine is medium bodied with medium acidity. It displays strawberries, blackberries, and currant, before finishing with a bit of white pepper and a touch of toast. Smooth and fresh with softened tannins.

Pair this wine with chicken teriyaki, pepper steak, as well as smoked or grilled meats. This would be a great bbq wine.
