Montserrat, in north-east Spain, is perhaps better known as a day-trip destination for Barcelona tourists visiting the Benedictine Abbey than it is for wine. The Abbey is perched on the mountain peaks that give the region its name (Montserrat means "saw mountain" in local Catalan), and though it's quite rightly world-famous, the wines from the surrounding area deserve a look as well!

Enter Ca N'Estruc (or "house of the Estruch"). Located in the town of Esparreguera, just below the Abbey, records of the winery date as far back as 1574, and it has passed down through the Estruch family ever since. It was the first winery registered in the DO of Catalunya, and today comprises 22 hectares of vineyards growing in the sheltered lee of the mountains. The focus is on local grape varieties like Garnacha, Samso (or Carignan), and Tempranillo — all three of which make up this full-bodied, fruit-driven red.

Enjoy over the next 3-5 years at about 18 C.

Fruit forward and vibrant on the nose, with aromas of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, and plum. Floral rose petal notes are joined by sweet pipe tobacco and fresh rosemary and bay leaf, with hints of dusty earth. Overall, it's invitingly fresh, with layers of complex depth.

Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with more pronounced flavours of raspberry, cherry, and blackberry. The acidity is brisk and carries through on the refreshing finish, while the dusty tannins help balance the bright, vibrant fruit. The floral notes from the aroma are quite faint on the palate, instead of being outshone by fresh red fruit flavours. There's just a hint of rustic earthiness to add depth.

A rustic red that is perfect with cured sausages and firm cheeses, or paired with a fresh flatbread pizza topped with sun-dried tomatoes.
